About the NW Suburbs
Kane County is a prosperous region known for its attractive downtown's, fertile fields and lovely river valley. Faced with booming growth, county leaders strive to protect its beloved heritage of a small-town atmosphere while providing big-city benefits for residents and businesses. Apparently, many visitors have discovered these attractive features, because Kane County expects its present population of 492,000 to increase 50 to 75 percent by 2030. "Kane County is a very diverse community with three components: Urban, suburban and rural," says Karen McConnaughay, chairman of the Kane County Board. "The urban and suburban components grow at a faster rate. One of the things we're trying to protect throughout this growth is the rural component, and we can maintain 50 percent of the agricultural area in the county by planning future development in our critical growth area and the rural corridor. This protection promotes reinvestment in teh small-town communities for which our county is known." Kane County is home to 30 cities and towns. Most retain some rural landscapes; some are bustling, urban municipalities.
